Year Closure: Concerns Grow Over the Future of Union Workers

Calls to protect jobs, healthcare, and contractual rights during renovations

By MD Nasir, New Jersey, USA

Plans to close New York City’s historic and luxurious Plaza Hotel for at least four years have raised new concerns about the future of hospitality workers. According to information published on October 14, 2026, renovation work on the hotel’s exterior façade is expected to begin in January 2027. The hotel is reportedly expected to remain closed during the renovation period.

As a union hotel worker in New York City, I believe that a major decision like this should not focus solely on preserving a historic building. The livelihoods, healthcare, and future employment of the people who work there deserve equal attention.

A Hotel Closure Means More Than a Business Shutdown

The Plaza Hotel is one of New York City’s best-known luxury hotels. For decades, it has been associated with tourism, hospitality, special events, and the city’s rich history. If the planned long-term closure moves forward, an important question remains: What will happen to the employees who work there?

Hotel workers are more than employees receiving a paycheck. Behind every worker is a family, rent or mortgage payments, daily living expenses, medical needs, and plans for the future.

For union members in particular, health insurance, pensions, contractual rights, and a steady income are essential. If a workplace closes for an extended period, employees need clear information in advance about how these benefits and protections will be maintained.

The Important Role of HTC in Protecting Union Workers

My name is MD Nasir. I live in New Jersey and work as a banquet server at the InterContinental New York Times Square. I am a member of the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council (HTC). From my personal experience, I understand how important a union can be in the hotel industry.

A strong union gives workers a collective voice and plays an important role in protecting fair wages, healthcare, pensions, and dignity in the workplace.

I have great respect for the leadership of HTC President Rich Maroko. I believe strong union leadership and solidarity among members are essential to protecting workers’ rights, job security, and long-term well-being in the hospitality industry.

In light of the Plaza Hotel’s proposed closure, the hotel’s management and the relevant union should engage in transparent discussions about employees’ futures. Workers need clear answers to several important questions:

  • How long will employees be able to continue working?
  • Will opportunities be available to transfer to other hotels or workplaces?
  • What impact will the closure have on health insurance and pension benefits?
  • What arrangements will be made for employees when the hotel reopens?
  • Will returning workers receive priority for available positions, subject to the applicable labor agreement?

These questions should be addressed before the closure begins so that employees have sufficient time to understand their options and prepare for the future.

Renovations Should Not Come at the Expense of Workers’ Livelihoods

Renovating and preserving a historic building is important. Improvements may be necessary to maintain the building’s safety, appearance, and long-term condition. However, the people whose livelihoods depend on the hotel must not be left facing unnecessary uncertainty because of the renovation project.

In my view, the hotel’s management should work with the relevant union well in advance to develop a realistic plan for affected employees. Where possible, the plan should include opportunities to work at other hotels, retraining programs, protection of contractual benefits, and clear written guidelines regarding employees’ eligibility to return when the hotel reopens.

Management should also explain how health insurance and other benefits will be handled during the closure, taking into account each employee’s circumstances and the terms of the applicable labor agreement.

One point must be made clear: It would be premature to conclude that workers’ jobs or benefits will automatically be terminated because of the renovation. The actual outcome will depend on the applicable labor agreement, employment arrangements, and the plans formally announced by the hotel’s management.

My Hope: Protect the Future of Hotel Workers

As a union member, I believe that success in the hotel industry depends on much more than beautiful buildings, luxurious rooms, or excellent guest service. Behind every successful hotel are thousands of hours of hard work, skill, dedication, and professionalism contributed by its employees.

If the Plaza Hotel closes for an extended period, the concerns of its employees must be taken seriously. A clear plan is needed to address their contractual rights, healthcare coverage, pensions, and future employment opportunities.

I hope the hotel’s management and the relevant union will work together to find a fair and practical solution—one that allows the historic building to be renovated while protecting workers and their families from unnecessary financial hardship.

Ultimately, I believe the true value of a hotel lies not only in its history, luxury, or reputation but also in how it respects and protects the people who work every day to keep it running.

A historic hotel deserves to preserve its legacy, but its workers deserve a secure future, too.
