I have spent nearly 30 years working in the hotel industry in the United States. Working at various hotels in New York has provided me with more than just a livelihood; I have learned to interact with people respectfully, understood the value of hard work, and realized the vital role a good job plays in a family’s life.
Life in the hotel industry is not easy. Often, one must set aside personal fatigue to bring a smile to a guest’s face. Work schedules vary—early mornings, late nights, and even holidays. During major events, one might have to stand and work for hours on end. Yet, at the end of the day, when a satisfied guest offers thanks, all the hard work feels worthwhile.
Throughout my long career, I have deeply realized one thing: for a worker, a paycheck alone is not enough; respect, rights, and family security are equally important.
That is why a job at a unionized hotel holds such special significance for me.
Through a union, a worker is never alone in the workplace. There is an organized system to address issues regarding fair wages, overtime, leave, and other employment rights. Knowing that one’s labor is valued and that there is a platform to speak up for one’s rights boosts confidence in one’s professional life.
However, for me, one of the most crucial aspects of a union job is healthcare.
We live in the United States, where the cost of medical care can be a major financial burden for many families. No one knows when they might need medical treatment. Therefore, having good health insurance—not just for myself but also for my wife and family members—is extremely important to me.
As the head of the family, I believe that family security depends on more than just the money in a bank account; the assurance of receiving necessary medical care when a family member falls ill is also a vital component of that security.
This long career has taught me that a good job can shape not only a person’s present but also their future. Supporting a family on a hotel salary, funding children’s education, covering household expenses, and saving for the future—this is the reality of a working-class person’s life. A job becomes even more valuable when it includes good healthcare and other employee benefits.
Throughout my career, I have seen many colleagues who worked with dedication year after year—whether in the kitchen, housekeeping, the restaurant, banqueting, or room service. Despite their different roles, they shared a common identity: they were workers who took pride in their labor and wanted to work with dignity.
To me, no hotel job is insignificant. From beautifully setting a guest’s table to serving at a grand event for hundreds of people, every task involves hard work, time, skill, and responsibility.
Looking back over thirty years, countless memories come flooding back—busy nights, massive events, physical exhaustion, laughter and camaraderie with colleagues, moments of joy, and occasionally, difficult times. All of this makes up the story of my life in the hotel industry.
I still believe that a worker’s greatest assets are their hard work, honesty, and dedication to their profession. And receiving fair compensation for that labor is their rightful due.
To the new generation entering the hotel industry, my advice is this: do not choose a job based solely on the hourly wage. Carefully consider factors such as health insurance, family benefits, retirement plans, overtime policies, and how well your workplace rights are protected.
Because my thirty years of experience have taught me one vital lesson:
A job is not merely a source of income. A good job is deeply connected to a person’s dignity, their family’s health, their children’s future, and their overall security in life.
I am grateful to the Almighty. Over this long career, I have learned so much, had the opportunity to work with countless wonderful people, and strived to support my family through my own hard work.
Even today, when I go to work at the hotel, I reflect on the person who stepped into this profession nearly thirty years ago—a person whose dreams, perhaps, were not particularly grand. I simply wanted to work with dignity, support my family, and receive fair compensation for my labor.
To this day, these three things—dignity, fair wages, and family security—define what a good job truly means to me.
