Another special day has arrived in the life of Liam Dominguez, who miraculously survived a horrific arson attack in Queens, New York. Yesterday marked the birthday of this brave child—who, despite suffering burns over more than 95 percent of his body at just ten months old, has defied death and continues to move forward on a journey toward a new life.
On July 10, 2019, a devastating fire in East Elmhurst, Queens, claimed the lives of Liam’s mother, Elizabeth Rodriguez; his six-year-old sister, Emma Dominguez; and his grandfather, Claudio Rodriguez. Firefighters discovered Liam in the arms of his mother amidst the flames; she had tried to shield her infant son with her own body until her final moments.
Because over 95 percent of his body was burned, doctors initially feared his chances of survival were less than one percent. He was later transferred to the specialized burn unit at Shriners Hospital in Galveston, Texas. Through extensive medical treatment, multiple surgeries, and a grueling rehabilitation process, he gradually recovered.
One of the most emotional chapters in this child’s battle for life is the celebration of his subsequent birthdays with the FDNY firefighters who rescued him. For his third birthday in 2021, FDNY members organized a special event. The rescuing firefighters were overcome with emotion upon seeing Liam and described his progress as extraordinary.
Liam—whose survival chances doctors once deemed near-zero—now serves as a living reminder of his survival story with every birthday he celebrates. His life represents more than just the memory of a family tragedy; it stands as a symbol of courage, the triumph of medical science, familial love, and the extraordinary humanity of the FDNY firefighters.
The memories of the loved ones lost in that Queens fire remain deeply cherished in the hearts of the family. Yet, each new birthday of Liam’s seems to convey a message—even amidst that grief—that life sometimes makes the impossible possible.
