An Experienced Tax Administrator Takes on a New Challenge

The Government of Bangladesh has appointed Dr. Md. Sajjad Hossain Bhuiyan as a Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), bringing an experienced tax administrator into one of the country’s most important institutions responsible for combating corruption.

Dr. Bhuiyan joined the Bangladesh Civil Service (Tax Cadre) in 1991 and built a distinguished career in tax administration over more than three decades. During his professional journey, he served in several important positions at the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and later became a Commissioner of Taxes.

Before joining government service, he reportedly worked as a senior officer at the Investment Corporation of Bangladesh (ICB), gaining valuable experience in the country’s financial sector.

Most recently, under the interim government, Dr. Bhuiyan served as the Chairman of the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) under the Ministry of Finance. His experience in financial reporting, corporate governance, regulatory oversight, accounting standards, and financial accountability is expected to strengthen the ACC’s institutional capacity.

The appointments of the new ACC Chairman and two Commissioners come after the commission operated without leadership for nearly five months following the resignation of the previous Chairman and two Commissioners on March 3. Analysts believe the new leadership will help restore momentum to the commission’s policy-making, investigation, and anti-corruption activities.

Many observers consider the appointment of a former senior tax official to the ACC a significant development. His expertise in income tax administration, financial investigations, asset analysis, identifying irregular financial transactions, and combating money laundering could prove valuable in handling complex corruption cases.
